Aztec Labs Acquires Obsidion to Consolidate Its Identity Verification Stack
Aztec Labs has announced the acquisition of Obsidion, a company that developed a wallet designed for private payment interactions on the Aztec network. The acquisition also includes ZKPassport, a protocol for identity verification using zero-knowledge proofs.
ZKPassport allows users to verify their identity without exposing sensitive data from government-issued IDs. This is achieved through zero-knowledge proofs, a cryptographic technique that enables one party to prove a statement is true without revealing the underlying information.
Aztec Labs plans to maintain ZKPassport and its iOS application as open-source software, which is crucial for identity verification protocols. The decision to keep both the protocol and app transparent suggests that Aztec values transparency and audibility.
