Brazilian Police Uncover Clandestine Crypto Mining Operation in Rio de Janeiro

Brazilian authorities have seized a large-scale cryptocurrency mining operation in the Complexo do Lins neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, uncovering a new layer of crypto crime enforcement.

The mining setup, which consisted of dozens of high-performance machines connected through illegal power links, was hidden behind a market in the area. The machines had cooling infrastructure to prevent overheating, suggesting that the operators were trying to keep them online continuously to generate revenue.

According to investigators, the mining farm was allegedly used to generate between R$40,000 and R$50,000 per month, which would have been a significant source of income for the Comando Vermelho criminal faction. The seizure is part of a larger operation that targeted suspects accused of maintaining armed territorial control, drug trafficking, and other crimes.

The case highlights the growing trend of cryptocurrency crime moving beyond scams and exchange hacks, with organized crime groups using stolen electricity to convert it into digital assets. Investigators are examining whether the setup was used for money laundering or to disguise resources tied to drug trafficking, adding another layer of complexity to the case.
