IBIT vs FBTC: Key Differences Between Top Bitcoin ETFs

The cryptocurrency market has seen significant growth since the launch of Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in early 2024. Two of the largest ETFs in this space are the iShares Bitcoin ETF (IBIT) and the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin ETF (FBTC). Both funds hold spot Bitcoin and charge identical 0.25% expense ratios, making it difficult to determine which one is better.

Liquidity is the key differentiator between IBIT and FBTC. IBIT has more than $46 billion in assets and trades about 7 times the dollar volume of FBTC on a daily basis. This superior liquidity can give investors and traders a slight cost advantage, making it an attractive option for those looking to trade Bitcoin.

In contrast, FBTC stores its own Bitcoin rather than outsourcing it to a third party, which may be a structural advantage. However, the fund tends to be used more often by retail buy-and-hold investors than traders, resulting in lower trading volume. Overall, while there are minor differences between the two funds, IBIT is considered a better option due to its superior liquidity and tradability.
