France Becomes Global Hotspot for Crypto-Related Kidnappings
France's reputation as a hub for cryptocurrency has taken a darker turn. The country has become the epicenter of crypto-related kidnappings, with 41 reported cases in just four months of 2026.
The alarming rate of attacks has left authorities scrambling to address the issue. French national prosecutor Vanessa Perrée confirmed that 88 people have been charged in connection with these crimes, a stark indication of the level of organized violence involved.
The root cause of this crisis lies in centralized KYC data breaches. The most notable incident was the 2020 Ledger breach, which compromised the personal information of over 270,000 customers worldwide.
Criminals have been using this stolen data to target rich crypto holders at home. In some cases, local youth are being recruited by foreign crime syndicates to carry out the violent attacks.
