EU Imposes Sweeping Ban on Russian and Belarusian Crypto Transactions
The European Union has taken a significant step in regulating cryptocurrency transactions with Russia and Belarus by implementing a sectoral ban. Effective May 24, 2026, all EU-licensed firms are prohibited from transacting with Russian or Belarusian providers.
The ban covers custody, trading, transfers, settlement, wallet hosting, and stablecoin issuance, making it a comprehensive measure to restrict the flow of funds between the EU and Russia/Belarus.
Notably, the sectoral ban targets the architecture of circumvention rather than individual nodes, which is a new approach in regulatory measures. This shift is aimed at preventing entities from simply spinning up successor companies to bypass sanctions.
