According to William Mougayar, the Ethereum Foundation is on a 'subtraction path', working to become less central to Ethereum over time. This involves hardening the protocol and shipping upgrades, with the goal of making the world less dependent on the foundation's involvement.
Mougayar also suggested that the criticism comes from people who want a more centralized authority, rather than a decentralized organization like the Ethereum Foundation. He pointed out that the foundation is not responsible for marketing or promoting Ether, and that this is a common misconception among critics.
