UK Authorities Crack Down on Wrench Attacks Targeting Cryptocurrency Holders
A recent court ruling in the UK has brought an end to a high-profile 'Wrench Attack' case involving five individuals who targeted cryptocurrency holders. The suspects, who met their victims at a bar in Shoreditch, London, in July 2025, used violent threats and facial recognition verification to coerce them into accessing their bank and cryptocurrency accounts.
During the investigation, the cryptocurrency exchange platform Coinbase reported unusual activity in the victims' accounts, prompting the police to intervene. The suspects were subsequently identified and arrested, with four of the main offenders receiving prison sentences ranging from 3.5 to 6.5 years.
The case has caused long-term psychological trauma to the victims and their families, highlighting the rising risk of offline violent crimes against cryptocurrency asset holders. A fifth individual involved in the case was sentenced to community service for money laundering.
